Loss of the Ship

16. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS & REFERENCES

First our archive of photos has come to us from dozens of sources all over the globe and we have strived valiantly to identify the ownership of everyone - essentially an impossible task. Some photos taken from the Menai suspension bridge are virtually identical so some photographers must literally have been standing shoulder-to-shoulder and capturing the same few moments in time. If we have published any of your copyright photos without your permission, we apologise. Please contact us so we can rectify the situation email address.

Conway Cadets   Too many to list for their photos, reminiscences, documents and support.
Bill Hughes   Of Llandegfan, Angelsey who very kindly provided us with some photos of the ship on her last trip through the Swellies (and for a couple of the earlier tow from Bangor to Plas Newyedd). These are all private photos that have not been published before. Bill used to load coal into the ship with the cadets at Penrhyn Dock near Bangor Pier.
Captain G A B King   Second Officer in the ship in 1953 and on board on the day for the use of his sketch maps of the Swellies (I trust he will forgive my minor amendments) and for information gathered from his published material.
Ian Murcott   A professional photographer from the Llangefni Camera Club for his splendid series of photos taken from Menai suspension bridge.
Pete Widders   For use of material from his web site that also features the loss of the ship.
Emrys Jones
Richard G Jones
Current Menai Strait Pilot and his son
Harbourmaster at Caernarfon. Richard's great grandfather was the pilot in the ship, and his grandfather was pilot in the lead tug. They provided much information, photos and charts used throughout this site. Richard's own very detailed analysis of the loss of the ship is here.
Mr Hampson   Member of Conway staff and keen amateur photographer for his many still photos taken onboard that day.
John Southwood   "JRS" - indomitable Old Conway who is veritable mine of information on everything Conway. He has encouraged and supported the authors throughout and provided all sorts of information and images. There seems to no question he cannot answer.
David G. Wiliams   Many people have contributed to this site, but David deserves the real credit. He is the author of the substantive part of the site - the analysis of causes of the loss. Over many years he has examined a mass of data much of which he reproduces herein, and gradually evolved what must be the definitive explanation of what happened and why. He is an Old Conway, a first class pilot of 20 years standing and formidable intellect.
G Pari Huws and
Terry Beggs
For their excellent fully illustrated book, 'The Menai Strait', and permission to use several of the photos therein. For Capt Pari-Huws' several informative letters and many patient telephone conversations, and for providing copies of what we believe to be Capt Goddard's chart and the tidal streams diagram by the Royal Welsh Yacht Club, Caernarvon, all herein reproduced.
Dr. Toby Sherwin   Director of Estuarial Research, Marine Science Laboratories, Menai Bridge, for his copious fascinating correspondence, and for the three papers published by the J R Astr. Soc., herein reproduced.
The Met Office...
Bidston Observatory Proudman Institute.
Our grateful thanks to all the people who provided the synoptic charts, weather records and tidal information covering both the 1949 and 1953 transits which are reproduced herein.
