Concerts & Plays

Annual end of year Plays and/or Concert Parties arranged and performed by the cadets were a regular feature from 1859 to 1948. For concerts members of the choir featured prominently. Up to 1924 the concerts were generally performed by cadets dressed as Pierrot Troupes wearing white clown oufits with pointed hats but sometimes they were  "blacked-up" as Minstrels.

In 1947 a play reading group started and the members decided to put on a play which was not a great success. However from 1951 the concerts seem to have stopped and instead a well organised play was performed for cadets and parents as part of the Summer Weeked. That tradition continued until at least 1970.

1955 Morning Departure by Kevin Woollard. Staged on June 18th 1955 for two performances only, it was a drama about submarine S14 that had suffered an underwater explosion. Set in two locations, one in the boats control room and the other at the shore base coordinating the rescue efforts. Review
