The Image Archive
The Image Archive is now fully back online. Incredibly we have broken through the 10,000 images barrier. The 10,000th image was a colour photo of the ship at Bangor in 1947.

The archive is split into five sections:

Audio & Video: This contains 40 sound and film clips which can be listened to /viewed online. I still have another 17 or so to load.

Photos: This is the vast majority of the archive and shows people, places and things from 1859 to 1974 organised in albums by year. Only 14 of the years have no photos. The photos are also grouped into 132 themed albums covering things like Rugby 1st XV teams, the Pinnace, Demolishing The Huts and the Ship at Rock Ferry.

Documents: These are also organised in albums by year (1859 to 1974 but with a few gaps), and 24 themed albums covering e.g. Term Calendars, Plays & Concerts, Crests & Badges and Passing Out Exams.

Art Gallery: This covers cartoons, drawings and paintings organised into 71 albums by the artist’s names, three albums for entries where the artist is not known and five albums collecting art relating to each of the ships including some of Conway 2 (ex Winchester) while she was TS Edgcumbe at Saltash. Incredibly there is one painting of her being broken up in 1921 - to go with the three photos and one newspaper cutting of that event.

“Today”:  This group of albums covers everything since 1974. There are albums for Club Dinners since 1923 with just 11 years missing, eight Term/Year Reunions and 14 Branch events. Finally there is an album of ‘How We Look Today” and 32 albums showing Conway places today e.g. inside the Kelvin Block, the site of the Camp and the Rock Ferry moorings.

The frightening part of all this is that it takes me approximately 4 minutes to prepare and load an image so that’s nearly 12 weeks of continuous work just to load them. For example authenticating dates and names can be challenging involving lots of cross checking with The Cadet magazine and The Cadets’ List (also online). The latest revamp now online involved moving the whole archive to a new database as our old software was no longer supported, removing duplicates, validating lots of dates, re-indexing entries and much more taking me five more weeks which seems ridiculous but I hope you’ll think the result is worth the effort.

I hope you enjoy looking through the Image Archive and, as always, if your photos and documents are not there please email copies to me at alfie@hmsconweay.org. I am now aiming for 11,000images!
