Bibliography
Old Conways have published an incredible number of books on a very wide range of subjects. I have added publisher,
ISBN etc. details and a copy of the front cover wherever I have been able to find them.
Hugh Conway
the pen name of Frederick John Fargus (1861-2)
Hugh
Conway was the pen-name of Frederick John Fargus (1861-62). An injury
while in Conway meant he could not go to sea so he became an author
instead. His third book, Called Back, was published in 1883 and
described as a “sensational novel of murder, amnesia, Siberian exile, political assassination and detection”. It was an immediate huge best seller with over 350,000 copies sold, “one of the most remarkable successes of the last 100 years”.
Reviewers anticipated that Hugh would displace Wilkie Collins,
Stevenson and even Conan Doyle as Britain’s top writer.Unfortunately
Hugh died young at the age of 37 so his potential was never realised.
Many works have recently been republished and are available here. His works included:

Published in 1883. Re-published by Eveleigh Nash & Grayson Ltd., London circa 1930.
It was described as a “sensational novel of murder, amnesia, Siberian exile, political assassination and detection”. It was an immediate huge best seller with over 350,000 copies sold, “one of the most remarkable successes of the last 100 years”.
It became a very successful stage play (with the lead played by OC
Kyrle Bellew (1866-67)) and was filmed in 1914 and 1933.
The 178 page book has been reissued by Collins Crime

Republished as a paperback by ReInk Books in 2017.
A ‘shilling shocker’ from the late 19th century, a macabre novel of
murder and its consequences, originally published as a Christmas Annual
for adults and now reissued complete with a hilarious parody by
satirist Andrew Lang released the same Christmas.
In the eyes of the law, murder is murder. When Dr North discovers that
his beloved Philippa – surely the most beautiful murderess who ever
crossed the pages of fiction – has killed her abusive husband, he must
decide whether to turn her in or take the law into his own hands. There
are dark days ahead as he wrestles with his conscience: can a crime
ever be justified? And is Philippa the villain or the victim?

The Secret Of The Stradivarius
Republished by Kessinger Publishing, LLC (June 17, 2004)
48 pages
ISBN-10: 1419181971
ISBN-13: 978-1419181979
A short story which begins "Seeing me
turn towards him, he sprang from his seat, and before I could speak,
snatched the fiddle from my hands, replacing it at once in its case;
then closing the cover, he heaved a deep sigh of relief. I had no time
to entreat, remonstrate, or resist; but as he took the fiddle from me,
all wish to distinguish myself in a line that was not my own left me,
and I almost laughed aloud at the folly and presumption of which I had
been mentally guilty. Yet it was strange -- very strange"
