Dates have been set for the 150th Anniversary Celebrations at Liverpool in 2009. Click here for details.
The
editor of ther Club Newsletter, Alan Burns (48-50) ever, and rightly, a
stickler for accuracy, challenged my dates for the Conway song. I'm
working from very poor scans of the Cadet magazines; some are awful and
the three I relied on here are amongst the worst. A bit more searching
though adjacent pages and I found more legible dates. He was quite
right; the 'third' song was introduced in December 1916. Details were
published in the Club Newsletter No. 42, Autumn 2001 pages 28-30. Conway Songs.
Added the first Chief Officer, a Mr Littler, to the list of Chief Officers.
Added a few more details abot the large painting of the Ship above the entrance to the Mess Deck in the New Block: Relics.
Updated the entry for Lt Henry Warington Smyth

Court (1861- 1864, cadet number 187), founder of the Sea Scourts Notables.
Added

Canada, George Horsley & Co (West Hartlepool), Jordain Shipping and
T & W Smith (Newcastle) to give 519 shipping companies. Added

Regt, King Edward’s Horse and the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) to give 146
uniformed services. Extended the list of maritime training
organisations in which OCs have served to include Canadian Coast Guard
College, Georgian College, Nova Scotia Nautical Institute, Survival
Systems Training Ltd and the National Nautical School, Portishead where
an OC was once Captain Superintendent. A Career At Sea? |

For
years I knew that the Conway Song we all know was not the original one.
I had words for an earlier song but no music. A long search has finally
come up with three songs! The first, extant in 1898 was also titled "A
Conway Carol". I've found the missing music for the second song
although this seemed not to be sung by 1917. The third song, 'our song'
was introduced in December 1918. Conway Songs
