The CMNT was originally created on 25th April 1963 to collect funds to aid training of boys attending HMS Conway
Cadet
School. The cadet school closed in 1974 but its managing legal entity remained in being but in suspended animation. On
the 6th December 1979 the HMS Conway legal entity was renamed the Conway
MN Trust and the ship was reborn in an entirely new form to sponsor young person's maritime
training.
From 1979 to 1996 the CMNT granted training funds to various
training organisations such as Sea Cadets Marine Society, Sail Training and
the National Sea School Gravesend.
In
1996 the CMNT's Chairman Andrew Tyrrell (OC 42-43)
tasked trustees John Weight (Chamber of Shipping) and Don Houghton (OC
55-56) to set up a scheme to sponsor the Trust's own Cadets. The first CMNT Conway Cadets started training that year.
In 2017 the Trust signed a degree course partnership
agreement with Trinity House to continue sponsoring both deck and engine
Cadets. The Training Provider is Chiltern Maritime.
